Primary schools turning to Lego to tap into engineering potential

LUCKY primary school students are getting the chance to play with lego and explore basic engineering concepts at the same time.

Young Engineers Australia’s Lego Engineering program allows kids to simultaneously indulge in their creative side while also gaining an early understanding of engineering fundamentals.

The program is currently offered at Rostrata Primary, Queen of Apostles School and Rossmoyne Senior High School (Saturdays), and Ranford Primary School also set to take part from term one onwards.

Lego drives science learning

Belt transmission, vibration and metal fatigue are terms often associated with a first-year engineering degree, but Bungaree Primary School and Hillman Primary School students put these words into action when engineering experts E2 Young Engineers Perth visited the schools last month.

Years 4 to 6 students participated in a Lego engineering program on Wednesday, November 28 making functional motorised Lego prototypes of race cars, jelly blenders, drills and compactors. Head Lego engineer Chee Wong said the program provided hands-on STEM learning by educating children using a favourite childhood toy.
